Mumcu has developed a certain design character in his interpretations of space, form and materials. The Öktem Aykut exhibition will be the first to showcase his works at a gallery space.
Departing from his experience in furniture design, Mumcu lets the objects emancipate
from their functions and transforms them into sculptural structures.

Superpose, the first solo exhibition by Tayfun Mumcu will take place at Öktem Aykut from February 5th until 16th, 2019. Mumcu has come to be known for his works in interior architecture and design.
The exhibition brings together 12 different pieces that originate as stools, coffee tables, dressoirs, screens and other kind of furniture objects, and redefines them as pure surface and mass that promt to be approached with a renewed visual take.
In his interior designs, Mumcu has come to reveal a distinct character of enriched eclecticism and witty effortlessness and combining the two with his own sense of form and use of material. The works exhibited in Öktem Aykut's brute gallery space are chiefly made of acrylic blocks, brass, mother of pearl and stainless steel and present a distinctly solid elegance. The unconventional juxtaposition of materials, the treatment of functional objects as abstract structures, as well as Mumcu's design tradition that embraces antagonistic references reveal a queer language and a multifaceted visuality upon the very intersection of art and design. With their both brittle and heavy structures and the intensity of their references, the works demand a fresh visual approach and subtly challenge the conventional perceptions and expectations of
the beholder.
